Weatherization

Up to $3,500 Mail-In Rebate

Weatherizing your home can help prevent ice dams, frozen pipes, and drafty rooms. It can also help you stop wasting energy and take control of your heating and cooling costs. Efficiency Maine offers rebates and loans for weatherization projects.

Eligibility

Participant

  • Homeowners of any income

Building

  • 1- to 4-unit residential building. For larger buildings, see Commercial Programs.
  • Building is principal, year-round residence for occupants, NOT a seasonal, second, or vacation home/rental
  • Installed in primary living area, not a garage or outbuilding
  • Located in Maine
  • New construction (including additions) is not eligible for weatherization rebates.
  • For natural gas attic incentive, pre-upgrade R-value must be 5 or less. If pre-upgrade R-value is over 5, then non-natural gas incentive applies.
  • Lifetime limit of one wall insulation, one attic insulation, one basement insulation, and one air sealing rebate per building.

Installer

  • Residential Registered Vendor for insulation and air sealing

Timeframe

  • Upgrades completed within the last:
    • 12 months (for upgrades completed on or after January 1, 2018)
    • 24 months (for upgrades completed before January 1, 2018)

Upgrade (Click for details)

Energy Assessment with 6 hours of Air Sealing

  • 6 hours of air sealing
  • Upgrade must include a Building Performance Institute (BPI) energy assessment
  • Code-approved fire protection was added to foam insulation when applicable
  • Cost of energy assessment and air sealing must be at least $600

Attic Insulation

  • Attic must be air sealed prior to or as part of insulating the attic
  • Attic must be insulated to one of the following levels:
    1. Open attic insulated to at least R49
    2. Enclosed cavities filled to capacity with dense-pack insulation
    3. A minimum of 5” of high density spray foam on all attic surfaces
    4. High density spray foam was applied to within 1.5” of the surface of cavities that were subsequently enclosed
  • Batt insulation not eligible for rebates
  • Upgrade must be followed by a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Safety Test
  • Code-approved fire protection must be added to foam insulation when applicable

Wall Insulation

  • Walls must be insulated to one of the following levels:
    1. Enclosed cavities were filled to capacity with dense-pack insulation
    2. Open cavities were filled to capacity with low density spray foam
    3. High density spray foam was applied to within 1.5” of the surface of cavities that were subsequently enclosed
    4. Walls were covered by a minimum of 2” of rigid foam insulation (applied over the studs)
  • Batt insulation not eligible for rebates
  • Upgrade must be followed by a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Safety Test
  • Code-approved fire protection was added to foam insulation when applicable

Basement Insulation

  • Basement upgraded by insulating:
    1. Foundation walls from 2 feet below grade to ceiling with minimum 2” rigid or spray foam
    2. Basement or crawlspace ceiling with either dense-pack insulation or minimum 2” of foam
  • Batt insulation not eligible for rebates
  • Upgrade must be followed by a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Safety Test
  • Code-approved fire protection was added to foam insulation when applicable

Getting Started

  1. Find a Residential Registered Vendor
  2. Decide on upgrade details
  3. Arrange for financing (optional)
  4. Complete the upgrade
  5. Submit the Rebate Claim Form
  6. Rebate check will be mailed in 6 weeks

Terms and Conditions

The Registered Vendor must be paid in advance of claiming rebate if the homeowner is the rebate recipient. Efficiency Maine does not warrant the performance of installed equipment. Program and incentives subject to change or termination. Consult Efficiency Maine website to confirm current program terms, rebate availability, and forms. Must use current rebate form at time of submission. Incomplete information may delay or disqualify your rebate.
